Buying an Heirloom Tablecloth for the Holidays and Beyond: 4 Tips to Remember

Have you ever thought about buying a quality heirloom tablecloth that you can use on special occasions and then pass down to the next generation when you are finished with it? What are the things you should take into consideration? Here are four tips when buying a tablecloth for the Holidays or for any special occasion:

  1. Table size. What is the size of your table? Measure the width and length. What drop do you want? Do you want the tablecloth to hang 10” from the edge of the table to the bottom of the hem? For example, if you have a rectangular table that measures 68” long and your desired drop is 10”, multiply by 2 to factor both sides of the table (10 x 2 is 20). Add 20 to the length of 68” which is 88.” Your desired tablecloth length would be 88.” Standard drops in tablecloths range from 6” - 12.” Less than 6” and the tablecloth looks too little for the table. Too long and the tablecloth may fall in the laps of guests which can be catastrophic if they get up to leave the table and the tablecloth goes with them! A round table’s size is calculated a little differently. Multiply your desired length by 2, then measure the table through the diameter from one side to the other. If your round table has a 50” diameter and you want a 10” drop, the calculation is (10 x 2 = 20) plus 50” equals 70.” Your tablecloth should be a 70” round one. The rule of thumb for all tablecloths is if you cannot find the exact size you want, then size up to the next available one.

  2. Quality. What to look for in a quality tablecloth. When buying an heirloom tablecloth look for one made of linen, cotton, or a linen-cotton blend. Inspect the weave of the fabric for consistency. For a rectangular tablecloth inspect the corners. Are they mitered for a finished look? Are the stitches even and straight? What about the colors in the design? Are they vibrant and the same throughout the tablecloth? Is the design one you won’t tire of? Will it stand the test of time?

  3. Price. Prices will vary. A tablecloth of great quality produced in a mill that inspects all of their products before leaving the mill will be more expensive than one that is mass produced. France and Italy are famous for the quality of their linens. Look for linens from these countries and you will easily see the fine details that make them so exquisite. Remember, it may seem like an expensive investment when you first purchase a fine tablecloth, but over time the cost will be minimized by the number of times it is used and the length of time you will have it. If your budget does not allow for this one time purchase, buy what you can afford. If you don’t love the tablecloth, don’t buy it. You will not use it if you truly do not love it.

  4. Care. Always launder your tablecloth before storing it. Make sure to inspect for stains beforehand and treat them accordingly. Store the tablecloth away from light and dust. Many heirloom tablecloths are machine washable. Check the label on the tablecloth and follow the washing and drying instructions. If you are uncomfortable doing this, then seek the assistance of a professional.

My Chic Farmhouse sells rectangular, round and square tablecloths made in Italy. Our prices are very reasonable. Come in and we will show you the intricacies of our tablecloths and why our customers who buy them are never disappointed!

Let's Talk Pillows!

Have you ever bought a zippered pillow cover that you really liked and then bought a pillow insert the same size as the pillow cover? Did the pillow go flat after a few months of everyday use? The reason for this is the pillow insert is the same size as the pillow cover. We suggest when buying a pillow insert, buy one two inches longer in the length and width than the pillow cover. Your pillow will be plush and firm. All of our pillows at My Chic Farmhouse have a pillow insert of 22” while the pillow cover is 20.” The Totally Chic Pillow by Chez Moi is an example and can be found here when you click on the link. Happy decorating with pillows!

August 2020

It’s been a busy summer for us. We have been trying to keep a schedule that accommodates our customers. We are finding being open three days a week and being available by appointment to work for most people. Also, with two of our Italian linen vendors closed for the month of August, we ordered more merchandise beforehand to be well stocked before we can order again in September. The Italians have it right by closing businesses for a month for vacation so employees can spend time with their families and enjoy the time off. We hope you have been able to take time off to spend time with your family.

Have you checked out our online shop recently? We added more table linens and kitchen towels from Tessitura Toscana Telerie before their mill closed for their vacation. Their linens are beautiful and the designs they create are perfection. It’s very hard not to order everything in sight from their catalog, but our shop is tiny and we can only have so much inside it!

Enjoy the rest of your summer. If you are visiting the coast, stop by and see us. We always enjoy seeing you and catching up!

Summer 2020

My Chic Farmhouse reopened at the end of May with a modified schedule. We want to thank our customers for choosing to shop by appointment, shop when we are open or from our website. For now, we are open Friday - Sunday and by appointment on the days we are closed. We are sorry for any inconvenience this is causing by not having our regular schedule. Our current schedule seems to work with the guidelines retail stores must follow. We are looking forward to being open more days when more people are comfortable being out..

Have a wonderful Summer! If you are unable to travel, get out in nature. The birds are singing, the flowers are in bloom and breathing fresh air while walking does wonders for the mind, body and soul. It never ceases to amaze us how much beauty is around us here on the coast.

Happy Spring 2020

We came back from our buying trip in Atlanta a few days earlier than expected in March because of the COVID-19 crisis. While in Atlanta, we were able to shop at our favorite showroom at AmericasMart which was open. We ordered many wonderful items and received them earlier in the week. On March 19th, our County implemented a Shelter in Place order mandating all nonessential businesses to close. My Chic Farmhouse is closed until further notice. In the meantime, we continue to post on Instagram and Facebook. If there is anything you want, email us and, if you are local, we will arrange pickup or delivery of the item. If you live elsewhere, we can ship the item to you depending on what it is.

We hope you have a happy Spring. Stay healthy and positive. We will see you when we are able to open our shop again.

2020 Is HERE

We had a wonderful time in Italy last month and brought back some lovely items for the shop. February is here and we have ordered more merchandise from our regular Italian vendors and added a new one while in Italy. My Chic Farmhouse will be full of treasures once again.

We continue to post photos of our new merchandise on Facebook and Instagram so you can see what we have. If you haven’t been in the shop lately, come by for a visit. It would be fun to catch up.

Next month we are off on a buying trip to AmericasMart in Atlanta. We look forward to seeing what we will find there. It will be springtime with many flowers and trees in bloom. It’s a beautiful time of the year in the South to visit.

Happy Holidays 2019

We are closing out the year with a bang. Our fundraiser for the Mendocino Coast Humane Society is in full swing. We hope to give a generous donation to this wonderful cause at the beginning of January. Also, Rosanna will start 2020 with a bang as she travels to Italy in January to find treasures for our customers. There isn’t a better way to start the New Year in our opinion. My Chic Farmhouse will be closed from January 5 - 21st and reopen on the 22nd.

May you and yours find peace, love and happiness this holiday season!

Happy Thanksgiving 2019

We at My Chic Farmhouse have a lot to be thankful for. We have great customers and vendors. We are in the cutest building on the MacCallum House Inn’s property. What more can we ask for?

With this in mind, we want to do something special for a cause which Rosanna has supported personally over the years. From November 29 - December 29, My Chic Farmhouse is donating a portion of its sales to the Mendocino Coast Humane Society. The staff and volunteers of this amazing organization work tirelessly to find good homes for the many animals in their care. My Chic Farmhouse has an array of unique gifts for your family and friends. Come in and shop during the above time frame and know a portion of your purchase will go to this wonderful cause. You may also donate directly to the Humane Society.

Fall 2019

It’s fall. The mornings and evenings are cooler and crisper. Halloween decorations are displayed in stores, in homes and outside. Next month will be Thanksgiving and in December, Christmas. Is it just us or do you also think this year has gone by fast?

At the end of September, we attended the Petaluma Antique Faire. We found some wonderful treasures. Some have sold and a few unique pieces are still in the shop.

We continue to purchase and receive more merchandise. Our shop is full and decorated for Fall. If you haven’t been by in a while, stop by and see us. We are always happy to see you.
